MD-forgram

Spring has finally sprung here in Baltimore, and we are excited to celebrate one of our favorite holidays. This year, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10th, and we can’t wait—we love celebrating our favorite ladies in our lives with brunch, some fresh flowers, and maybe a mimosa or two.

Below, we wanted to introduce you to some of the best “moms” in the lives of the Tomahawk team. Then, keep reading to learn about how we want to help you celebrate the Mom in your life this year!

The Best Friend Mama

“My mom is one of my best friends! There is nothing better than being able to vent over a glass of wine with your mama and know that no matter what—through the many ups and downs of life—she will always be there for you.”

– Jill

New Mamas

“I’m lucky enough to know a number of close friends and family that have recently become (or are about to become!) new mamas! Nothing is sweeter than seeing a new baby loving on their mama – and getting to love on them, too!”

– Raquel

Pet Mama

“Shout out to the little guy that made me a Mom – a pet Mom, that is. Raising Ace has been a great reminder to thank my Mom for all she did for me – feeding me, making sure I had water, and cleaning up after me – all great aspects of motherhood (it’s all the same in puppy-motherhood, but with fewer “Thank you”’s and more (very) wet kisses!).”

– Allison

Long Distance Mama

“Despite re-locating to North Carolina about 8 years ago, my Mom remains a tried and true Marylander! Berger cookies, Orioles, Ravens, Black-Eyed Susans, Old Bay….they are all a few of her very favorite things.”

– Tara

We want to see the moms in your life, and to help you celebrate them on May 10th! Join in our contest to win a Maryland-themed gift for your MD-Loving-Mama.

It’s as easy as 1-2-3 (literally):

3. Tell  us why your Mom loves Maryland, and use the hashtag #momsloveMD

The winner will be announced on May 2nd and we will contact them to make sure the basket of goodies (shown below!) makes its way to you by the Big Day.

Client Gifts for Manly Men

phone caseAs a newbie to the world of business ownership, I’ve been recently venturing into the realm of client gifts. People love feeling that they’re appreciated, so it’s our job to ensure that our clients know just how much we love their business.

But finding the right client gift is harder than one thinks—at least harder than I thought—especially when that client is the complete opposite of you. After accumulating several new pieces of business driven by middle-aged, left-brain males, I realized the need for a suitable gift for this particular demographic—and I was at a loss. After a bit of research however, I’ve conquered the ultimate client gift list that is just perfect for those “manly men” of the working world.

It’s important to understand the type of person you’re working with. Getting to know someone can be a challenge when you’re trying to maintain a professional relationship; but if you pay close enough attention there is oftentimes a subtle hint as to the world in which they live. The trick? Choose something that embraces your brand while also being functional. The Tomahawk brand is rugged, natural and hardworking, so I’ve chosen pieces that are not only useful, but will remind clients of my company whenever they’re used—and hopefully bring them back to me with more business in the future!

Oceanfront Office

blog

So, I’m on vacation and the best thing about this week has been having time to focus on TDco work instead of client work. I’m not sure if that makes me a workaholic or not, but either way I’m okay with it—hitting the “off” switch is harder than it seems. My boyfriend snapped an Instagram of me yesterday while working from the porch, with the caption, “No such thing as vacations, just oceanfront offices.” I thought that summed it up pretty well.

I imagine that building a brand for your design business is sort of like an accountant doing his own taxes. You have to do what you do every day for other people, for yourself, and finding the time for that is generally a pretty big challenge.

Being blessed with having worked at a Marketing agency for almost five years prepared me for all that is involved in creating a solid brand. Logo, website, social media, advertising, marketing, writing blog posts (!), not to mention the business-side of things with managing finances, business development, client relations…I could go on. Maintaining it all (plus juggling the biggest portion of my time, client work) with this one-woman show? Talk about overwhelming.

But at the end of the day, one of my favorite parts of starting this company has been watching it unfold before my very eyes. In just two short months, the terrifying unknown has slowly turned into excitement as I look at how much my life and my career have changed. There is nothing more satisfying and nothing else I’d rather be doing in this moment—and that thought puts a smile on my face every single morning.

Cheers!

Interior Lovin’

Image

I’ve recently discovered my love of not only GRAPHIC design, but INTERIOR! I’ve been spending the majority of my free time over the past few weeks remodeling what is soon-to-be the brand new Tomahawk office! Priming, painting, ripping out 40-year-old carpet, purchasing things that are way out of budget (they’re worth it, I promise), the works. I absolutely love picking out fabrics, frames and furniture that I’m sure I’ll be swooning over for the next few years. Granted, my office is only temporary for now, but I still find it incredibly important to create a space that I’ll walk into each and every day and say, “This is mine.”

With that, I’m excited to say that I will be fully invested in my company as the first, full-time employee beginning May 1. It’s exciting, it’s terrifying and best of all, it’s a brand new chapter. Today, I began the official process with my lawyer and his words to me as I walked out were, “I love that you have ambition; the toughest boss you will ever have is yourself.” Coming from a man that started his own law firm from the ground up and is still going strong at the age of 68, I’d say that’s a refreshing compliment—and one that I will certainly take to heart.

“After” photos to come soon!

Cheers,
J.

Inter’l Women’s Day

In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting some inspiring, woman-owned, design-related businesses! I feel blessed to live in a place where, even as a female, I have the opportunity to take the mildly-terrifying professional leap into launching a business of my own. So let’s celebrate, as my fellow women-owned business and I strut our stuff!

Kari Fisher, interior designer and owner of Kari Fisher Designs in Atlanta, GA, creates custom textiles that transform into these phenomenal plush pillows. The dynamic patterns, plus the beautiful imperfections of hand-painting, create a striking balance between sophisticated properness and the comforts of laid-back home life.

Kari’s love of traditional block-printing allows her to create uniquely beautiful pieces that are 100% attention-grabbers. Variations in color, printing, fabrics and patterns allows for that creative flexibility we all yearn for. In honor of International Women’s Day: Rock on and keep gettin’ your block on, Kari!

IceMilk Aprons drew me in right away; not only with their gorgeous linen products, but with their story. As a company that has sprung from idolizing my grandfather, I love that this company was inspired by the founder’s grandmother! The product line features beautifully handmade aprons that could make even the worst cooks want to give it a go with the oven. Throw on one of these bad boys, pat some flour on your cheeks and voila! Instant kitchen goddess.

The company also offers fantastic gift packages including recipe cards and a custom monogrammed apron—looks like I’ll be covered on bridal shower gift ideas for quite some time…

While I may not have children yet, Senn & Sons’ nursery prints are too adorable to resist mentioning. The simplistic designs create an ultra-modern feel for baby, who is welcomed into his/her design-haven of a nursery with firetrucks, surfers, or my personal fave—the whale!

Owner, Kimberly, spends her time balancing her two adorable “Sons” and creating these awesome prints. Check out her video, which is a great glimpse into her inspiration, her process and her happiness that springs from loving what she does! A super chic, designer-mom icon for International Women’s Day!

Office Mojo

Office

Starting a new business means starting work in a new environment. Lucky for me, I have an excellent office space available that happens to stem from the same root as that which sprouted the name Tomahawk.

My grandfather, Thomas, started his own company in 1965, successfully fostering a business realm into which I never imagined myself venturing. His building co. thrived for forty years, positioning my family in a way that I am forever grateful. Now, almost 50 years later I’m taking a page from that book and hoping I hit the gene pool jackpot and possess at least a wee teaspoon of his business sense. In the meantime, I’m at least super pumped to start designing the Tomahawk Office in the same office he once called his own.

A glimpse of what’s to come:

1. Every designer needs ampersand bookends >>
2. Flower inspired wall mirror >>
3. There’s something remarkable about a quality drafting table >>
4. Plush gold accent pillows >>
5. Industrial-inspired fan >>
6. For practicality: iron utility scissors >>
7. Just because of a small candle obsession >>
8. Textured ceramic table lamp >>
9. Faux rose arrangement >>
10. Sophisticated wingback bar stool >>

Cheers!
